Start with the phones your users already carry
The first decision in a mobile application project is the platform: Android only, iOS (iPhone) only, or both. It decides how many apps are built, how many store accounts you need, how many phones must be tested, and what the upkeep costs every year. Make this decision from evidence, not from the phone the owner carries.
Checking is not hard. For a staff app, list each person who will use it with their phone model, or decide that the company will issue phones. For a customer app, look at the device report in your website analytics if you have one, or ask at the counter for a week and keep a simple tally. In Ranchi and across Jharkhand, field staff often carry Android phones, many of them older or low-cost models, while some owners, doctors and customer groups use iPhones. Your own count is what matters, and it often surprises people.
Android only, iOS only, or both
| Option | Fits when | What it means for cost and upkeep |
|---|---|---|
| Android only | A staff app on company-issued or staff-owned Android phones, or a customer base that is mostly Android. | One app and one store account. Internal staff apps can sometimes be installed without a public listing. Testing must cover many screen sizes and older Android versions. |
| iOS only | Less common for business apps. It fits when every user has an iPhone or iPad, for example a small known group or iPads at a counter. | One app, an Apple developer account, and Apple’s review for every release. |
| Both | Customer-facing apps for the general public, or staff with mixed phones. | Two apps to test and release, two store accounts and two reviews for each update. The server, database and admin panel are shared, not doubled. |
| Android now, iOS later | Staff use Android today, and an iPhone version for customers is planned once demand is proven. | Lower cost at the start. The backend is designed for both from day one, so the second app connects to it later. |
Our blog post on Android vs iOS app development goes further into how to read your users’ phones and when an iPhone version is worth paying for.
Native or cross-platform: what the two terms mean
Once you need both platforms, you will hear these two words from every developer. Native means each app is written separately, using the tools Google and Apple provide for their own platform. Cross-platform means one shared codebase produces both the Android and the iOS app, with some platform-specific parts where needed. Both are normal, widely used approaches.
| Point to compare | Native | Cross-platform |
|---|---|---|
| Code to maintain | Two separate codebases. | Mostly one shared codebase. |
| New phone features | Usable as soon as Google or Apple release them. | Sometimes arrive later, or need extra platform-specific code. |
| Heavy graphics or deep use of phone hardware | Usually the stronger choice. | Often enough, but check for your case. |
| Forms, lists, reports, photos, location | Works well. | Works well. |
| Making a change later | The change is made in each app. | Most changes are made once and tested on both. |
Neither approach is better for every project. For a field-staff app with forms, photos and location, both can work. For an app that depends on the newest phone hardware, native is usually safer. Whatever approach is chosen for your app should be written in the scope with the reason, along with who will maintain that code later. Ask every company you speak to for the same in writing.
One backend for Android, iOS and your website
Whatever the platform choice, the apps should not keep their own separate data. In a well-planned project, both apps call the same server through REST APIs, read and write the same database, and are managed from one admin panel. A customer who orders on an iPhone and later logs in from an Android phone sees the same order history. A price changed in the admin panel changes on both apps and on the website at once. Logins, roles and permissions are set up once.
The Eleplasht case study shows the principle. For this Ranchi plastic furniture manufacturer, MATROP designed eleplasht.com and a connected platform for customers, vendors, outlets, delivery partners and head-office admin, all on a single product catalogue and order backbone with role-based access. The case study describes the customer side as web and app, with the website and apps growing together as products and territories are added. One set of records, many screens.
A shared backend is also what makes “Android now, iOS later” practical. If the server and APIs are designed for both platforms from the start, adding the iOS app later is mainly app work, not a rebuild.
How the platform choice affects cost and maintenance
We do not publish prices, because two apps with the same name can differ greatly in scope. These are the items that change when you add a platform:
- Second app: adds app development and testing, but not a second server, database or admin panel.
- Store accounts: Google Play and the Apple Developer Program each have their own fees and rules, set by Google and Apple. The accounts should be in your organisation’s name. See our pages on Android app development and iOS app development for what each store needs.
- Testing: Android has many screen sizes and versions in use. iOS has fewer models, but every release is reviewed by Apple. Both need testing on real phones.
- Yearly upkeep: each new Android or iOS version, and each store policy change, can mean an update to that app. Two apps mean two updates to check and release.
For what drives the cost of an Android app specifically, read Android app development cost in Ranchi. Every proposal from MATROP shows each platform and its upkeep as separate lines, so you can see what the second platform adds.
When a phone app on either platform is not the answer
If your users only need to read information, call you or send an enquiry, a mobile website will serve Android and iPhone users alike with no store accounts at all. If the app is only for a few office staff who sit at desks, a web screen in your existing software may be enough. And if you cannot yet say which phones your users have, do the count first; it costs nothing and prevents paying for the wrong platform. If you are still deciding whether you need an app at all, start with our comparison of app, mobile website, web app and WhatsApp flow.
When you are ready, bring your phone count and the main jobs the app must do. Call 9430106005 or meet us at our office in Ranchi.
