DLT registration for bulk SMS in India
Under TRAI's Telecom Commercial Communications Customer Preference Regulations, 2018, a business that sends commercial SMS in India has to register on a DLT (distributed ledger technology) platform run by the telecom operators before its messages are delivered. In plain words, three things are registered:
- Your business: the organisation sending the messages, called the principal entity, registered with its business documents.
- Your sender ID (header): the short name customers see as the sender of your SMS.
- Your message templates: the fixed wording of each message, with blanks for details that change, such as a name, amount, date or OTP.
Each template is registered under a category, such as promotional, transactional or service, and the category decides how the message is delivered. A message that does not match a registered sender ID and template can be blocked. Promotional messages also follow each customer's preference (DND) settings, so they do not reach every number on a list.
Rules and registration charges are set by TRAI and the operators and can change, so check the current position on the TRAI website.
