Do you need an app, or something simpler?
Many owners contact an app developer after someone told them “you need an app”. Sometimes that is right. Often a mobile website or a WhatsApp message flow does the same job at lower cost and with less upkeep. MATROP builds all of these in Ranchi, so the first thing we do is help you pick the right one. This page gives you the same comparison we use, so you can think it through before the first call.
The test is simple. How often will a person open it? And does the job need something only an installed app does well, such as using the camera all day, recording location, or working without mobile signal? If the answers are “rarely” and “no”, you probably do not need an app yet.
The four options in plain words
Installed app (Android or iOS)
The app is downloaded from Google Play or the App Store and sits on the home screen. It can use the camera, location, notifications and offline storage fully. It suits people who use it every day or every week: staff, regular customers, members. The cost is higher because the app is built for each platform, published under store rules and updated as Android and iOS change. People also have to agree to install it, and a one-time customer rarely will.
Mobile website
A website designed for the phone first. It opens from Google search, a shared link or a QR code, with nothing to install. It is the right tool for showing services, prices, photos and location, and for taking calls, WhatsApp chats and enquiry forms. An online shop works well this way too. It does little when there is no signal, and it does not stay on the home screen unless the visitor saves it. Our post on why mobile-first websites bring more enquiries explains what makes these sites work.
Progressive web app (PWA)
A website built so it can be added to the home screen and open like an app, with some pages saved for weak signal. No store listing is needed. It can suit tools that people open often but that do not need deep phone features, such as a staff order form or a student test portal. Support for notifications and offline storage differs between Android and iPhone browsers, so this option has to be checked against your users’ actual phones before it is chosen.
WhatsApp-based flow
Using the official WhatsApp Business API, your software sends messages such as appointment reminders, fee alerts, OTPs and order updates, and can take simple replies. Your customer installs nothing new because WhatsApp is already on the phone. The limits are real: business-initiated messages use templates that Meta must approve, customers must agree to receive messages, and long forms or detailed reports do not fit in a chat. The rules are on the WhatsApp Business Platform site.
Decision table: which one to build first
| Your situation | Usually the right first build | Why |
|---|---|---|
| People find you on Google, then call or visit | Mobile website | Nothing to install, and it works for first-time visitors. |
| Patients or parents need reminders and updates | WhatsApp alerts sent from your software | They already read WhatsApp. No install, no new login. |
| Salesmen or technicians enter data all day, with photos, sometimes without signal | Installed app | Camera, location and offline saving are needed every day. |
| Students or members check results, timetables or balances several times a week | Web app (PWA) or installed app | Frequent use. Choose an app if notifications and offline use matter on every phone. |
| Regular customers reorder every week | Installed app, plus WhatsApp order updates | Saved details and order history make repeat orders quick. |
| Online shop for occasional buyers | E-commerce website | Most buyers will not install an app for one purchase. |
| Testing a new business idea | Mobile website or web app first | Learn what users actually do before paying for store apps. |
Examples from businesses like yours
These are typical cases, not named clients.
- A clinic in Ranchi gets most new patients from Google and loses some to missed appointments. It needs a mobile website with a call button and WhatsApp reminders from its booking software. Patients visit a few times a year, so they will not install a clinic app.
- A coaching centre has students who check test results and batch timings almost daily. A web app or an installed app linked to the coaching software makes sense, because the same students open it again and again.
- A distributor has salesmen covering Ranchi, Hazaribagh and Ramgarh. They book orders in shops with weak signal and photograph the shelf. This is a clear case for an installed app that saves orders offline and sends them when signal returns.
- A restaurant needs its menu, location and phone number to open quickly from Google Maps. A mobile website does that. If it takes delivery orders, WhatsApp order updates can be added.
Questions to answer before you decide
- Who will use it: your staff, regular customers, or the general public?
- How often will each person open it: daily, weekly, or a few times a year?
- Does the job need the camera, location, barcode or QR scanning, or saving without signal?
- Will your customers install something? Ask ten of them before you decide.
- Where do your records live now, and must the new tool read or update them?
- Who in your office will handle users, content and complaints after launch?
How MATROP builds the one that fits
We build mobile-first business websites, WhatsApp Business API messaging, and Android and iOS apps with their admin panel and server. Because all of these come from one team, they can share one backend: the same customer list, the same orders and the same logins. That matters when you start small. If you begin with a website and WhatsApp alerts and add an app next year, the app connects to records that already exist instead of starting again.
Whatever we recommend is written in a scope that says what is being built, for whom, and what is left for later. If the answer is an app, see how a full app project runs from idea to store release. The next decision is the platform, which is covered on our Android, iOS or both page.
When you do not need any of this yet
If customers are happy to call you and you can handle the volume, a Google Business Profile, a simple website and a WhatsApp Business number may be enough for now. If your process is still changing every week, with new prices, new steps or new people approving things, settle it on paper first. An app built on an unsettled process gets rebuilt. And if your idea depends on thousands of strangers installing an app, test the demand with a website before paying for store apps. We will tell you this at the first meeting rather than sell you an app you will not use.
